Courts in Nassau County

The Nassau County Supreme Court has original jurisdiction over all criminal and civil cases. Only the Supreme Court can hear marriage dissolution cases such as separation, divorce, and annulment. The apex court also has exclusive jurisdiction over felony cases beyond Nassau County Court. County residents can resolve financial disputes above $25,000 at the Supreme Court.

Nassau County also has a County Court that handles most felony-related criminal cases. The County Court may also preside over minor criminal cases and civil cases involving monetary settlements below $25,000. The Family Court in Nassau County handles domestic abuse, juvenile matters, and child protective proceedings. Support magistrates and judges of the Family Court typically pronounce judgments on cases without juries.

Probate cases in Nassau County are brought before the Surrogate Court. Examples of these cases include conservatorships, management of estates, handling wills, and property distribution. Landlord-tenant disputes and other civil matters involving monetary settlements of not more than $15,000 can be resolved at the Nassau County District Court. The District Court has a small claims division tasked with handling financial disputes below $5,000.

There are more than 60 Justice Courts across Nassau County. Also known as Town or Village Courts, Justice Courts can preside over civil matters of not more than $3000 in monetary claims. Residents can also approach these courts to resolve eviction cases, dog complaints, and back rent claims. Justice Court judges often preside over ordinance violations, building violations, and lesser misdemeanors.

Juvenile Delinquency in Nassau, NY

Unfortunately, in many areas of the Nassau County, juvenile delinquency offenses are on the rise. There are many reasons for the inflation in youth offenders. The juvenile sentence in New York often depends on the severity of the crime, the number of charges, and other family matters.

In 2017, a total of 417 juvenile cases were reported for every 100,000 people age 10 to adulthood in the jurisdiction of Nassau County. Of that total, 94% of those proceedings were delinquencies which equaled 391 court cases. Another 0% were dependency cases that accounted for 0 of the juvenile cases.

A lot of counties, including, Nassau County, are focusing on family counseling and relationships rather than punishment for juvenile crimes. Future Nassau County juvenile delinquency tallies will show whether or not this approach is working.
