Cabell County was created from part of Kanawha County in 1809. It has an estimated population of 94,350 residents with 46,125 total housing units. Located along the Ohio River in southwestern West Virginia, the county covers an area of 281.0 square miles. It is home to the City of Huntington, which also serves as the county seat.

Courts in Cabell County

Cabell County is within the Sixth Judicial Circuit Court. It comprises the Cabell Circuit Court, Cabell County Family Court, and Cabell Magistrate Court. The Cabell Circuit Court has unlimited jurisdiction and hears criminal cases involving misdemeanors and civil cases with claims exceeding $10,000. The family court has jurisdiction over family and juvenile cases, including issues on guardianship, adoption, and probate. The court also runs a family mediation program and handles alternative dispute resolution.

There are three municipal courts in Cabell County: Barboursville, Huntington, and Milton. These courts hear cases involving misdemeanors and violations of city or municipal ordinances. They also handle civil cases involving claims less than $2,500 in dispute.

Juvenile Delinquency in Cabell, WV

Unfortunately, in many areas of the Cabell County, juvenile delinquency offenses are on the rise. There are many reasons for the inflation in youth offenders. The juvenile sentence in West Virginia often depends on the severity of the crime, the number of charges, and other family matters.

In 2017, a total of 602 juvenile cases were reported for every 100,000 people age 10 to adulthood in the jurisdiction of Cabell County. Of that total, 0% of those proceedings were delinquencies which equaled 0 court cases. Another 57% were dependency cases that accounted for 346 of the juvenile cases.

A lot of counties, including, Cabell County, are focusing on family counseling and relationships rather than punishment for juvenile crimes. Future Cabell County juvenile delinquency tallies will show whether or not this approach is working.
